feijoa-ing frenzy
it's a quarter past seven at night and dusk is swiftly falling, but that hasn't discouraged four little entrepreneurs. an hour earlier, R14 detected that several feijoas had already fallen from our tree in the back yard, and as the kiwi kids rushed outside to gather the treasure and start slurping it, a plan was quickly formed. out came the plastic bags and woozie made a sign and lookit:
the kids are all at the gate, flagging down cars... and these fruity feijoas are selling like hotcakes!!! yessiree, in twenty minutes, the kiddos've made *six* whole dollars!!!
so come on over and open your wallet and say after me, "help yourself!" and we'll swap ya for some fresh organic feijoas.
oh, *your* tree is burdened with fruit too? then maybe we can swap feijoa recipes instead...

Here's a bit of interesting/useless information for you - When I worked at Sainsburys head office in London, I asked the produce buyers why they didn't sell Feijoas in Britain, and he told me they couldn't grow them successfully - I then had a wonderful business idea that I could import them to the WHOLE of Europe from little old NZ...and then before the idea had got too much further the buyer also said "and don't think of getting us to bring them over - Feijoas don't travel well, and only last a couple of days once they have fallen - the cost of packaging, as well as the cost of waste is too great." So there you have it - we have Kiwis, Pukekos, Jandels and Feijoas - aren't we lucky!!
ReplyDeleteOne of the drawbacks of living down south - avacados and fejoas cost an arm and a leg. And are probably crap compared to your ones. Good on ya kiddos... wish I could be there to buy some too, I have a wicked fejoa and apple cake recipe.

oooh, that sounds scrumptious!!! we definitely need a recipe-swap, except that i don't have any feijoa recipes lol... they get eaten fresh before i have a chance to make them into anything. well, that's nearly true: i have tried FEIJOA MUFFINS on a number of unsuccessful occasions. any suggestions? X

Hey I'll send you my cake recipe, it's at home. And guess what? If I fork out $10 a kilo for manky-looking New World fejoas, I can have a scrumtious cake too. Robbery!
