musical notes

The sound waves have been particularly harmonious here of late. It's the brothers. Up until this summer it's been all about the individuals, each caught up in his own instrumental world, but suddenly creativity is combusting collaboratively and everywhere I look there is a communal muse.
There's scarcely half an hour of the day or night free from channelling Dragon, The Eagles, RCHP, Jack, U2, The Kooks. We are treated to guitar riffs accompanied by piano chords, two guitars simultaneously in motion - one brother playing lead, one plucking bass - three lads cooking up a musical storm: everyone sharing their knowledge with others, resulting in a rhythmic surf of sound.
Fingers are being strengthened, ears and strings tuned, voices rising and falling in melody and harmony - of course the rest of The Gang are magnetically attracted to little ensembles around the house where muso talent gathers.
Em's MP3 batteries are wearing out as songs are recorded and replayed and reaccompanied; redownloaded, rehashed and relished.
Tabs are explained, chords debated, original music jotted on manuscript as souls connect in a composition of notes and poetry, soaking in the metaphor of summer, the last week of brotherhood as we know it.

  1. I always wondered why people had more than one child... I mean, surely the pain of childbirth and horrors of toddlerdom put people off?

But anyway, after this post - NOW I see why. I guess it's very rewarding when you see them all working together. Hard work pays off huh?

Hey katy pie.... I have found your blog... or rather been dirtected here by the lovely nic. Loving it so far.. excepting of course the doomed self portraits. What a great blog. You have a talent.. of course I knew that. If I had one it would be soooo boring.

Must be something in the air because it has been just the same in our house. My children are supposed to do their music practice as soon as they wake up - so I've been treated to piano and guitar duos at 6am, with the little one banging the coffee table cos he doesn't have a drum set! It's nice to see them so keen but 6am is a little early for it all to start!!

  7. oh, hey. Sigh -- how have missed all of these lovely posts??

I want to comment on each of them! When did your boys start with guitar, Kate? And how? Mine are just interested now. They love Guitar Hero, want to try actual guitar. How should they start?

Oh, your beautiful girl! Twirling in the twirly dress. My Mer will be in her first wedding in April -- as a bridesmaid, not-a-bride-thank-God -- but she is "engaged" now, at not-quite-21. (Sh*t.) Oh, sweet girls -- wait a bit, okay? Sorry -- your 14yo looks lovely. Make her STAY 14, okay? :)

Now, Kate -- Meredith's birthday is in April -- she likes your pearly things -- the fresh water pearl bracelet, the pink pearl flower necklace -- can we come up with something in time for her birthday? She would love an original from you from New Zealand. :)

I told Hay I am Gone to Ground -- trying to finish artwork before a deadline. I'm so addicted to checking out my favorite blogs, but I'm going to try to get some work done in the studio this week. :)

    My email -- parrishml@aol.com
Do you want to look at pics of Meredith on my blog, come up with something she would like? Pearly. I trust you. :) Let me know if you have time. I plan to win $$ in this art show, so go crazy. :)
